It seems it wasn't even when the car door closed. Your burdens peeled away like summer clothes. Your bags were packed your mind made up for sure. The road ahead never felt so free before. You said light one up and hand it here. I'll catch you up on what's between my ears. Had to sell the boat just to live in an old folk's home While the college kids are in the street below. And I've been wanting to give up. I've been thinking it through. Seems I need a few more hours down this road with you. The things you say, the songs we sing the whole way through. I never wanted to give up, when I'm with you. Your cigarette's out again and it's been 20 years my friend. you said you'll ask one time then you won't bring it up again... ...what a question. I like watching you the last light of day. When your eyes catch the sun that way. And the conversation turns to dreams. And we find our better selves it seems. And I've been wanting to give up. I've been thinking it through. Seems I need a few more hours down this road with you. The things you say, the songs we sing the whole way through. I never wanted to give up, when I'm with you.

I smell like coffee and weed and I'm hurt by what you did to me. I don't know if I can do it again. I'm weak as water now my friend after the first time. And all the chances we had to talk it out but chose silence instead. And all the stories spinning inside our heads left no room for the truth to be said after all this time. Well if you wanna walk away like that, there's an open door with a welcome mat back where I call home. Yeah I might smoke myself silly but I find my smile, and I quit my fighting, wasn't worth my time no more. When the whiskey would flow and all was right, that's when we loved the most. But when the calendar and money crept in, there was no room anymore for friends doing stupid things. Well if you wanna walk away like that, there's an open door with a welcome mat back where I call home. Yeah I might smoke myself silly but I find my smile, and I quit my fighting wasn't worth my time no more.

What is it you see with your eyes closed? Why do you wake up? Who do you see first? What makes you best? What makes you worse? How are you different and how you're the same, and how is a human wrapped in a name? What is it you see with your eyes closed? What is it you see with your eyes closed? Why do you stand there with wide open arms? Who do you talk to when everything's dark? What makes your rules up and where is your line? What will you fight for? What will you fight for? What are you scared of and how are you brave? How do you act when it's just not your day? What is your card trick and your recipe? What's your addiction that no one can see? What is it you see with your eyes closed? What is it you see with your eyes closed? What does your mind do with something new? Shake your head and say that line again that you're used to... What is it you see with your eyes closed? What is it you see with your eyes closed?

I've got holes in my jeans. I've got holes in my shoes. I've got holes in my heart because of you. I've got dust in this head. I've got rust in these bones. I've got lust that runs deep and won't leave me alone. Mama put the record on I'll make room for you. Cause I know you've got 'em too, the things we bury away. And maybe thoughts will move on past the dark and the blue, and we'll be here and now, at least in love today. That song that you sing, when all's right in your head, though simple it seems, leaves nothing unsaid... ...so I'll patch these old holes, I'll shake this dust loose and I'll sing this old song like there's nothing to lose... Mama put the record on I'll make room for you. Cause I know you've got 'em too, the things we bury away. And maybe thoughts will move on past the dark and the blue, and we'll be here and now, at least in love today.

When I woke up after years to find I was really someone else, more and more like my folks, ain't nothing can be done. Playing the part has brought me tears, and so far from myself, sitting still will get me killed, cause I'm born to run. I've got a warrant down in Deckers where a man died at my hand. I've tried laying low till the dust would settle out. I've been haunted by a sheriff wearing black with seven hands, so I'll keep moving till my time has all run out It's gonna get you if you're ready or not at the end of the line no one knows when but it's coming for you so you'll be right on time whether a woman or a fever or the devil himself, it leaves you bow-legged and blind so I'll keep running it out so I'm not sitting still waiting to die. This bed has my back aching so I'm up early anyway and the nightmares are the barrel of a gun. a cup of dark will heal my heavy head from all of last night's rage, and sitting still will get me killed cause I'm born to run. I left her down in Tres Piedras with a kid from my best friend. I've tried laying low till the dust would settle out. I've been haunted by their faces and I know that I'll never win. So I'll keep moving till my time has all run out. It's gonna get you if you're ready or not at the end of the line no one knows when but it's coming for you so you'll be right on time whether a woman or a fever or the devil himself, it leaves you bow-legged and blind so I'll keep running it out so I'm not sitting still waiting to die.
