Currency
There’s pattern of thought and pattern of form
And where they break off is where we go wrong
If something is human and we choose to speak it out loud
The next breath we take is closer to working it out
There’s love in the arms of someone like you
There’s barking dogs, setting suns, rising red moons
When the bottom line fades so far out of view
What currency matters to you
A new baby cries and old man does too
For all of the life that passes by you
So cast out your nets and see what the haul will bring in
And when the going gets rough let it out and bring it back in
There’s hope in the future for when we’ll share time
There’s laughter and music and stars that align
When the bottom line keeps us distracted and blind
What currency eases your mind
There’s love in the arms of someone like you
There’s brow sweat and birdsong on a cliffside in june
When the bottom line fades so far out of view
What currency matters to you

SHOES
I’ve got two shoes on my feet and they fit no one else like me
You can put ‘em on and see when you walk down the street
Oh lord what a world this could be
You’ve got shoes on your feet too and they fit no one else like you
I could put ‘em on and see while i slip down the street
Oh lord what a world this could be
I’ve got eyes that let me see
Still my mind paints pictures for me
Why can’t my mind paint pictures of what your eyes might see
Why can’t I see things like you do
I’ll try to picture them the way that you want to
Seems such a simple thing to do
But it’s so hard to change your point of view
What I see What you see What we see
You’ve got shoes on your feet too and they fit no one else like you
I could put ‘em on and see while i slip down the street
Oh lord what a world this could be

Carolina
I’ve had a tattoo of a blackbird on the right side of my chest
Since highway 65 felt the rain
Past the hotsprings where the hippies bathed in birthday suits
And rested on the road to where the rockies met the plains
And I’ve felt a groan
From the floodplains and headstones of my family back home
I’ve felt a groan I’m giving in I’m coming home
Carolina
I’ve had a tattoo of a redbird on the left side of my chest
I put it there for pleasure and for pain
It reminds me of those desert walks my daughter’s tears, the long talks
On the drive with you to the show in Santa Fe
And I’ve felt a groan
From the foothills and cliff sides of my places back home
I’ve felt a groan I’m giving I’m coming home

The Hood and Sickle

The hood and sickle
Up on windmill ridge we killed a man
and buried him down the hill in 3 ft of sand
I’d always said he’d stole his last from dad.
The bullet in his heart made it permanent
The corn was high the moon was full and gold
the last he felt was the first october cold
And 30 years of working my old man against the wall
then let him go when the cancer came to call
If I stay in this town for too long,
someone might find what I did and try to make me think I’m wrong
But mom said, run rabbit run,
take the old blue buick that’s been fading in the sun
We’re in the clear now it’s done
keep your head down in the desert maybe time can heal this one.
Up on hermit’s peak I found escap, but thoughts of my old man kept me awake
16 months with tubes inside his veins poisoned water flowing everyday
You’ve stayed far too long in this pain we probably lost you long ago anway
So I prayed, run rabbit run, peel the pain of life away and fly into the sun
We’re in the clear now it’s done
till that hood and sickle come for me, man time can heal this one
run rabbit run, take the old blue buick that’s been fading in the sun
We’re in the clear now it’s done
till that hood and sickle come for me, man time can heal this one
Up on windmill ridge we killed a man, and buried him on that hill in 6 ft of sand

Sitting Still

Sitting Still
When I woke up after years to find I was really someone else
More and more like my folks but ain’t nothing can be done
Playing the part has brought me tears and so far from myself
But sitting will get me killed cause I’m born to run
I’ve got a warrant down in Deckers where a man died at my hands
I’ve tried laying low till the dust will settle out
But i’ve been haunted by a sheriff wearing black with seven hands
And i’ll keep moving till my time has all run out
It’s gonna get you if you’re ready or not at the end of your line
No one knows when but it’s coming for you, so you’ll be right on time
Whether a woman or a fever or the devil himself,
It leaves you bow legged and blind
So i’ll keep running it out so I’m not sitting still waiting to die
This bed has my back aching so I’m up early anyway
And the nightmares are the barrel of a gun
A cup of dark will heal my heavy head from all of last night’s rage
But sitting still will get me killed cause I’m born to run
I left her down in Tres Piedras with a kid from my best friend
I’ve tried laying low till the dust would settle out
I’ve been haunted by their faces and I know that I’ll never win
So I keep moving till my time has all run out
It’s gonna get you if you’re ready or not at the end of your line
No one knows when but it’s coming for you, so you’ll be right on time
Whether a woman or a fever or the devil himself,
It leaves you bow legged and blind
So i’ll keep running it out so I’m not sitting still waiting to die

Mama put the record on

Mama put the record on
I’ve got holes in my jeans. I’ve got holes in my shoes
I’ve got holes in my heart because of you
I’ve got dust in this head. I’ve got rust in these bones
I’ve got lust that runs deep and won’t leave me alone
So mama put the record on and I’ll make room for you
Cause I know you’ve got ‘em too, the things we bury away
And maybe thoughts will move on past the dark and the blue
And we’ll be here and now, at least in love today
That song that you sing when all’s right in your head
Though simple it seems, leaves nothing unsaid
So I’ll patch these old holes I’ll shake this dust loose
And I’ll sing this old song, like there’s nothing to lose
Mama put the record on I’ll make room for you
We’ll settle for a second on the space between us two
Mama put the record on I’ll make room for you
Cause I know you’ve got ‘em too The things we bury away
And maybe thoughts will move on past the dark and the blue
And we’ll be here and now, at least in love today

Disguise

Disguise
I saw a ghost on a prairie hwy
In fact i know you saw it as well
Because you’re different now and don’t make the faces you used to
You tried hard to make me think it wasn’t real
But my eyes work just fine on a Friday night
Seems there’s a few things you can’t see standing in plain sight woah
Maybe the mystery and doubt have shut your eyes
Or it’s all just a disguise
I heard a song through the trees deep in Pisgah
It brought a tear and a memory from within
You heard the same song and laughed after it faded
I hid my weepy eyes from your high horse grin
But my eyes work just fine on a Friday night
Seems there’s a few things you can’t see standing in plain sight woah
Maybe the mystery and doubt have shut your eyes
Or it’s all just a disguise
Quit your games now
There’s so much at stake now
I won’t tell ‘em your name now if they come asking
I’ll send ‘em away
But my eyes work just fine on a Friday night
Seems there’s a few things you can’t see standing in plain sight woah
Maybe the mystery and doubt have shut your eyes
Or it’s all just a disguise

MOONLIGHT
Moonlight only moonlight in my eyes, in my eyes sweet darlin’
Moonlight jealous moonlight tell me lies, tell me lies If only for a night, moonlight
Sad tune or a glad tune sing it soon, sing it soon sweet darlin’
Sand dune rendezvous me and you
Oh we’ll stay till the tide moves, sad tune
Friday it took since Friday to be ok. You too ok?
Friday it seems like my day to be ok
If only it’d stay
Moonrise, sunset moonrise fills my eyes
Bathes in light the cliffside
Colors unfolding wonder stir my mind
And changes inside
Moonlight only moonlight in my eyes, in my eyes sweet darlin’

REACH FOR YOU
I wake at night can’t catch my breath
Feels close as death staring nose to nose
I just roll onto my side
sleep through the night for one more go
When that feeling comes again
To big to fit inside my skin
Yet so small i could slip right through
I reach for you
When I hear the ocean hush
Gives me a rush i can’t ignore
I breathe the salt and close my eyes
The grains of sand the quiet roar
When that feeling comes again
To big to fit inside my skin
Yet so small i could slip right through
I reach for you
Under a sky of scattered lights
The deepest parts call to me so
I know the questions will arise
out of the night
But i learn to let go
